Rock formation at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, NC

History

The history of Fort Fisher dates all the way back before Europeans arrived when the Cape Fear Native Americans inhabited the land. Conflicts with Native Americans made it difficult for Europeans to colonize here, but the fort was eventually built-in 1861. Fort Fisher took two Union attacks during the Civil War and was captured in early 1865. The next big change to Fort Fisher took place in 1986 when it was added to the North Carolina State Park system. Since then, the fort has established beach access, educational programs, and tons of other amenities and services for guests.

What to Do

When you arrive at Fort Fisher, you’ll experience endless entertainment along the five miles of beach and trails. Hikers of all ages and skill levels will enjoy the Basin Trail, which begins at the Visitor Center and will take you through the marsh, giving a breathtaking view of the Maritime Forest. It’s an easy 1.1-mile journey that the whole family can get in on!

There’s also plenty of fun to be had in the water. You can swim all afternoon and avoid the crowds of the main beaches, and you can take a stroll on one of the last remaining undeveloped shorelines in the area. Lifeguards are present in some areas from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and there are always warning signs and flags to alert you of conditions. You can also fish on the pedestrian bridge and four-wheel drive beach, looking out for catches like bluefish, speckled trout, and pompano.

Fort Fisher is great for an afternoon meal, as there are 23 picnic tables available for guests. You can even bring some meat to cook up on the grill! These facilities are free to use. In addition to all these activities, you can also take part in their events throughout the year. Classes like Beach Safety 101, Birding at Fort Fisher, or Sharks of NC are great for a fun nature lesson. Most classes are free, but you do need to pre-register for select events.
