If you have never seen a sea turtle beach during nesting season, it is an experience not to be missed. However, it is very important to be respectful of these beautiful creatures so that they can safely lay their eggs without being afraid of onlookers. The Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project ensures the preservation of these sea creatures not only during nesting season, but all throughout the year. Volunteers dedicated to the protection of sea turtles patrol the south of Kure Beach and the north of Carolina Beach from May to August.

Here are a few ways you can be a part
  1. Take care on the beach. If you are on the beach during the day, take care to pick up any trash that you see or create. Fill in any holes you create while on the beach as well. If you are out on the beach at night when the turtles are coming up to lay eggs, sit quietly and watch them. Don’t approach the sea turtles or shine a light at them. Please do not disclose the location of nests you see to anyone other than authorities.

  • Learn more. Kure Beach and Carolina Beach both offer turtle talks, informing visitors of the beautiful sea turtles that frequent the beaches during the summer.
  • Visit the hospital. A short drive to Surf City, NC will allow you to see turtles at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital. They focus on rescue, rehabilitation and release. You can adopt a turtle for sponsorship or donate to help save turtle lives.
