My Packing List Includes My Pet

A vacation is a time away from home, usually spent relaxing with family and/or friends. And, since a vast majority of pet owners consider their animals members of the family – it’s no wonder that more pets are being considered in the “packing list.”

Pet Friendly Beach Vacation Rentals
Taking a pet with you on vacation can be a lot of fun, as long as you pre-plan your vacation to accommodate your furry pal. National Geographic actually published “The Dog Lover’s Guide to Travel” which includes ideas and locations for traveling with your pet.

First things first, make sure that your pet is welcome at your final destination, as well as any stops you make along the way! For instance, in Carolina Beach, NC, dogs are allowed on the beach with a leash from October 1st to March 31st. In Freeman Park in Carolina Beach, Dogs are able to be on the beach without a lease during those dates and with a lease any other time. Also, make sure your vacation rental is pet-friendly, as well.

Next, you can attain a health certificate from your veterinarian within 10 days of leaving for vacation which ensures that your pet is fit for travel. This Certificiate of Veterinary Inspection will also ensure that your pet has all of the vaccines that he/she needs during your travel plans.

Plan ahead for emergencies by locating vets in advance in your vacation destination in case something were to come up. Also, it is important that your pet has proper identification. If your pet were to get lost, this will help your pet be found more quickly. Having a recent picture in your wallet or phone will also be beneficial.

Perhaps most importantly, keep your pet restrained during travel with a harness or carrier. And, make sure to have tried out the harness or carrier before your trip. Highway traffic can be stressful and you want to make sure your pet is already comfortable in their travel attire.

Don’t forget to bring your pet’s medications with you on your trip! And, finally, be prepared to make pit stops. Your pet (dogs especially) need to stretch their legs, take care of business, and exercise mentally. Your pet also needs to drink plenty of fluids and eat up! Always offer your pet water whenever you stop, and try to maintain as normal of a meal schedule as possible.

Doing all these things will help to keep your pet safe and happy during your travels! So, go ahead and add your pet to your packing list. Just make sure you are properly prepared! Then, you both will enjoy your vacation!
